RMIF Issues Solvent Paints Advice
Bodyshops that haven’t made the transition to water-borne paints are like Ostriches burying their heads in the sand – that’s the opinion of Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) in the UK. New rules governing solvent limits in the vehicle refinishing industry mean that it is now illegal for paint manufacturers to produce solvent based products. While the vast majority of bodyshops are now working on water-based paints, some smaller shops, have yet to upgrade their mixing, drying and spraying equipment to facilitate the change.
Distributors have until the end of year to clear out their stocks of non-compliant paint, but as the year advances, smaller bodyshops will find it increasingly difficult to source solvent based paints, according to the RMIF.
