01.05.2009 CSO figures confirm downturn in new car sales The number of new cars registered in March fell by nearly two thirds when compared with the same month in 2008, figures released by the Central Statistics Office confirms. Just 7,348 new cars were registered in March, compared with 20,190 in the same month last year. Some 27,000 private cars have been registered so far this year, compared to 77,000 in the first three months of last year. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) says the figures are in line with forecasts, and reflect the downturn in the economy. SIMI director-general Alan Nolan said the society was disappointed that scrappage scheme wasn’t included in the budget. Nolan says a recovery in new car sales will have to wait for an upturn in the economy. Back |
