SIMI calls for rescue package for Irish motor industry

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has called on the government to implement a rescue package for the sector, including the introduction of a scrappage scheme. "A scrappage scheme is almost a no-brainer. It generates business in our sector, it protects employment, it generates extra revenue for the State and it has all the safety and environmental benefits as well," said SIMI director general Alan Nolan.

SIMI says the industry contributes an average of €2billion in revenue every year and employs over 45,000 people. SIMI, will present the most recent official figures for January’09 and to propose a rescue package for the industry in Dublin tomorrow.
