SIMI renews call for scrappage scheme

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has renewed its call for the introduction of a car scrappage scheme.

The Society renewed its call, while announcing that new car sales for the month of September were down almost 35 per cent on the same month last year.

Just 2,259 cars were registered in September, compared to 3,458 for the corresponding month in 2008.

To date just 55,136 new cars have been registered this year, down 149,059 units for the first nine months of 2008, a slump of 63 per cent.

SIMI points to the fact that 12 other European countries have already introduced scrappage schemes to help boost car sales and a similar measure in Ireland would be good for consumers, the industry, the environment and the Government.
