January CSO sales figures

THE number of new cars licensed in January fell by almost five per cent, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

CSO show that a total of 10,469 new private cars were licensed last month – down 527 from the 10,996 vehicles licensed in January 2009.

The CSO figures are at odds with figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).

SIMI figures show that the number of new private vehicles registered in January 2010 was 16,595 – a difference of more than 6,000 cars compared to the CSO figures.

Eddie Murphy, Chairman & Managing Director of Ford Ireland commented on the CSO figures: “Car registrations were actually up by 5% last month, but the bad weather and the strength of the month end period meant that many cars were late in being taxed or were taxed in early February, which explains the drop in the CSO figures”.
