SIMI expresses concern over back street operators
The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI has expressed concern over the proliferation of back-street operations that have sprung up as a result of lay-offs in the motor industry over the past two years.
Back-street operators, many working in the "Black Economy" have sprung up in every town and village around the country as the Irish motor industry shed jobs over the last two years.
Many of the motor technicians that were made redundant during the downturn, have become self employed and are now competing for service and repair work with their former employers.
"This is an issue not just for the industry, but for road safety. We’re seeing a proliferation of low-cost backstreet providers of servicing, in particular, many ill-equipped to carry out proper maintenance of today’s cars," SIMI Chairman Eddie Murphy told www.autotrade.ie.
