865 drivers detected speeding on National Slow Down Day

A total of 865 drivers were detected going over the speed limit during the 24 hours of National Slow Down Day.

Each of the drivers will now receive a €160 fine and have three penalty points applied to their driving licences, An Garda Síochána have said.

The detections were all recorded between 07:00 Monday morning (4th September) and 07:00 yesterday morning (5th September).

Garda members and GoSafe Safety Cameras were deployed in a bid to encourage drivers to reduce their speed, and a total of 149,488 vehicles were checked.

Gardaí gave a number of examples of “motorists putting themselves and others at risk” over the 24 hour period.

In one case, a driver was detected going at 121km/h in an 80km/h on the N2 at Drumcaw in Co Monaghan.

In Carlow, a motorist was detected traveling at 163km/h in an 120km/h zone on the M9 near Moanmore.

According to the latest figures, 127 people have died on Irish roads to date this year, 24 more than this time last year.
