BASF releases automotive colour report for 2024

The recently released automotive colour report for 2024 by BASF Coatings delves deep into the latest colour trends in the automotive industry, examining preferences on a global and regional scale.

As consumer tastes continue to evolve, colour remains a crucial factor in vehicle design, influencing purchasing decisions and establishing brand identity.

The colour distribution referred to in the report was calculated by BASF Coatings on the basis of the available information regarding global automotive production and paint application to passenger cars.

The report highlights a notable increase in the popularity of achromatic colours in the EMEA region, rising from 72 per cent in 2021 to nearly 80 per cent in 2024. This underscores the growing appeal of neutral tones.

White remains the most favoured colour, closely followed by grey. The latter was Ireland’s most popular car colour in 2024, for the ninth year in a row. Grey cars had a 38.47 per cent share of the Irish car market last year, with 46,626 units sold.

In the Americas, grey now holds almost a fifth of the total market share. Black has dropped by two percentage points compared to 2023, while white cars have seen an even more significant decline of five percentage points.

In Asia Pacific, black dominates and yellow blossoms. Achromatic colours remain the top choice for 83 per cent of consumers there, with black gaining two percentage points in popularity. Meanwhile, chromatic colours, particularly yellow, are on the rise, with softer tones like pastel and greige yellow leading the way.

Elsewhere, and of particular interest is the significant global surge in popularity for beige, which has nearly doubled its market share.”Beige and neutral colours evoke a sense of calm and sophistication, reflecting the desire for stability in a fast-paced world. They allow consumers to express their individuality while ensuring a timeless elegance in automotive design,” said Mark Gutjahr, global head of automotive colour design at BASF.
