EPA advises garages on battery rules

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is advising garages that sell batteries, either from the parts department or as part of a service that they

are regarded as a distributor and must register with an appropriate compliance scheme or local authority.

When disposing of old batteries, garages must make sure that they use
an authorised collector, working on behalf of a compliance scheme).

Garages should always store waste batteries in covered containers and keep them out of the rain. Batteries should never be drained, and should be
treated ad hazardous waste due to the fact they are explosive. The should be stored safely and given only to an authorised waste collector.

Waste batteries are often stolen from the back of garages so keep them secure.
