Govt set to reduce parking spaces and slash car journeys

An updated national Climate Action Plan will be unveiled by Government later today, which is expected to include new measures to reduce on-street parking spaces, slash the number of car journeys taken and increase the use of public transport.

Under this plan by 2030 there would be a 20 per cent cut to daily car journeys, a 50 per cent increase in walking and cycling journeys, and a 130 per cent increase in the number of public transport journeys in Ireland every day.

The new plan will also aim to have around 30 per cent of private cars as electric vehicles by 2030. This would mean that there would be about 845,000 private EVs and 95,000 commercial EVs by the end of this decade.

A hike in fuel prices may also be considered by Government to disincentivise private vehicle use.

The plan will feature a climate action roadmap for every sector of the economy consistent with the legally binding target of a 51 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
