Mirka production plants turn to bio-energy
Abrasives specialists Mirka has signed a deal with an environmental management company, Ekokem, to build a bio-energy plant next to Mirka’s main manufacturing facility in Jeppo, Finland.
The plant will use production waste to create energy from both Mirka’s Jeppo and Oravais production facilities. The building of the plant began in autumn 2012 and test trials begin in September 2013 and the plant should be fully operational in the beginning of 2014.
The energy production mix for the plant will be approximately 22% from production waste, approximately 50% from other waste-derived fuel, and 23% from wood chips. Peat will only be used as a spare fuel. Equipped with the latest bioenergy and waste-to-energy technologies, this bioenergy plant will significantly reduce use of heavy oil, greenhouse gas emissions and our landfilled production waste.
