Motor industry apprenticeships on the increase

Motor industry apprenticeships have been increasing steadily over the last three years, having hit a 14-year low in 2010, figures released by Solas, the Further Education and Training Authority confirm.

Last year a total of 465 first time apprenticeships were registered with Solas, a 37 per cent increase on the 2010 figure (340), which represented a 14-year motor industry low.

The peak year for registrations came in the millennium year 2000, when a total of 974 apprenticeships were registered. Throughout the decade apprenticeships showed a moderate decline to the point, where 753 apprentices were registered in 2008. However, as the Recession began to bite in 2009, registrations slumped dramatically to just 344 that year.
