NGK-sponsored Speedway star on a mission

NGK-sponsored Speedway star Matej Zagar insists he doesn’t want to wait for a wild card for the 2018 FIM Speedway Grand Prix series after winning the German GP.

The Slovenian triumphed in the final in Teterow ahead of Slovak racer Martin Vaculik, World Championship leader Jason Doyle and 2012 World Champion Chris Holder.

The fourth victory of Zagar’s SGP career moves him within seven points of Vaculik, who currently occupies the eighth and final automatic qualifying place for the 2018 World Championship.

Riders who finish outside the elite eight must hope for a wild card from the SGP Commission, but Zagar has no intention of leaving his SGP future in the hands of others.

He said: “It’s always a tough one when you have to wait and see what’s going to happen – whether you’re going to be picked or not.

“I’m worth picking, but I don’t want to wait on that. it’s all about winning. winning makes you happy, so that is my aim.”

NGK – the leading supplier of original equipment (OE) spark plugs, glow plugs and NTK Lambda and other engine management sensors – has been a long-time supporter of Speedway and also sponsors fellow GP rider Russian Emil Sayfutdinov who made the semi-finals in Germany and currently lies in sixth position in the overall standings.

NGK-sponsored four-time World Speedway Champion Greg Hancock recently withdrew from the remainder of the 2017 GP series as he seeks to fix his injured shoulder and focuses on getting fit for 2018.
