November new car sales up almost a quarter, EV sales marginally down
New car registrations for the month of November were up 22 per cent (1,123) when compared to November 2023 (921), according to statistics released today by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).
Registrations for the year-to-date are down one per cent (120,783) on the same period last year (122,055).
In November, 516 new electric cars were registered, which was a 59.3 per cent increase on the 324 registrations in November 2023. So far this year, 17,168 new electric cars have been registered representing a 24.2 per cent decrease compared to the same period in 2023 when 22,653 electric cars were registered.
Of interest to commercial vehicle body builders, HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) registrations are down 20 per cent (96) in comparison to November 2023 (120). For the year-to-date this segment is up 8.8 per cent (2,849). New bus and coach sales are up 28.57 per cent (9) in comparison to November 2023 (7). For the year-to-date this segment is also up 81.7 per cent (576) on 2023 (317).
Meanwhile, light commercial vehicle (LCV) sales declined by 30 per cent (537) compared to November last year (767). For the year-to-date LCVs are up 6.9 per cent (30,700).
Imported used cars have seen a 2.4 per cent (4,964) rise in November 2024, when compared to November 2023 (4,846). For the year-to-date imports are up 23.5 per cent (58,410) on 2023 (47,307).
In the new car market share by engine type for 2024, petrol cars continue to lead the new car market at 30.38 per cent followed by diesel at 22.86 per cent, then hybrid (petrol electric) at 20.95 per cent, electric at 14.21 per cent, and plug-in electric hybrid at 10.05 per cent.
