Opel Zafira tops accident list

The Opel/Vauxhall Zafira has topped the list of car models involved in an accident in the UK between 2015 and 2019.

Of the total number of accidents per 10,000 models on the road, the Opel/Vauxhall Zafira had the most incidents in the four-year period, with 511 accidents for every 10,000 models, according to a Freedom of Information request sent to the Department of Transport by Rivervale Leasing.

The Opel/Vauxhall Astra came second for the most accidents by this measure, with 363 accidents per 10,000 models on the road.

Rivervale Leasing said: “Of course, the more examples of each car there are on the road, the higher the likelihood of an accident. It’s little surprise, then, that the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa – the UK’s bestsellers right now – had the most accidents according to the DfT report, each with more than 33,000 total.”

According to Axalta, the top five models all have one thing in common: their popular standard colours are grey or blue.

Kevin Welling, training academy manager for Axalta Refinish in the UK and Ireland, said: “Colours like grey and blue are particularly deceptive, especially to the naked eye. They come in a myriad of different hues and a variety of finish effects, all of which have to be matched accurately.

“Our latest spectrophotometers ensure accurate colour matching, as they use special LED measuring optics to read the colour and the effect in under a minute. This measurement data is transferred directly to our colour management software and corrected automatically against over 200,000 formulas, making it easy for refinishers to find the perfect colour match.”
