RSA commissions review of vehicle repair and service standards
The Road Safety Authority has commissioned, UK-based Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) to review and make recommendations in relation to the standards employed in the motor vehicle repair and service industries in Ireland.
TRL has been commissioned to carry out a study which aims to review and make recommendations in relation to the standard of the vehicle service industry including the options for ensuring that the quality of work carried out by vehicle maintenance and repair services is of a consistent minimum standard, so that vehicle owners and the general public can be assured that the vehicles in use on Ireland’s roads comply with minimum legal and safety standards.
The study will focus on cars and vans, i.e. M1 and N1 category vehicles and will try to achieve its goal by consulting with a large number of interested companies and organisations in Ireland regarding the current issues, current and best practices and possible measures to resolve.
An analysis of the current and best practices from both European and International sources will be performed in the aspect of identified areas of safety and/or environment concerns and the measures to resolve them.
Finally, through another round of stakeholders’ consultations, TRL will try to establish feasibility and benefits of the shortlisted issues and measures to resolve.
The report of this study will be presented to the RSA and will contribute to the Action items 66 and 99 in Irish Government adopted Road Safety Strategy 2013—2020.
The study is due for completion in December 2015.
