Window to the Future of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

iaea2Autoglass in conjunction with Belron and Hella Gutmann presented “Window to the Future” at an event held in the Carlton Hotel, Dublin last Monday night. The event was attended by many members of the Institute of Automotive Engineer Assessors.

Eddie Irving, sales director Autoglass Ireland, opened the event by giving an overview of improvements and developments in automotive glass over the past 30 years. He also gave an outline of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which have been developed to automate, adapt and enhance vehicle systems for safety and better driving. Autoglass reports that it has seen an increase in the volume of replacement glass fitted to vehicles equipped with ADAS over the previous 6 months.

Dr. Chris Davies, head of technical superiority, Belron Technical, presented on the importance of correct fitment of replacement front windscreens as he reiterated that safety is of paramount importance. For example, an incorrect windscreen can be ejected during a collision thus effecting the operation of the passenger SRS airbag. 75 per cent of replacement windscreens fitted to vehicles equipped with ADAS requires re-calibration.

Pete Bradley, from Hella Gutmann, also explained in detail the calibration systems Hella have developed for use on ADAS and both he and Patrick Weck, (from Belron) also gave a live demonstration on how to set up a vehicle for calibration
