Mirka investing €25m in new production line in Jakobstad

Mirka has announced a €25 million investment in a new production line at its factory in Jakobstad, Finland.

According to Mirka, the manufacturing line supports the company’s green transition and is based on technology that could transform the entire abrasives industry in the coming years.

“We have developed a unique production technology to manufacture abrasives with a significantly smaller environmental footprint than traditional abrasives on the market,” said Mirka CEO Stefan Sjöberg.

The proprietary production technology, already in commercial operation in Jeppo and Jakobstad, enables the complete elimination of chemicals such as formaldehyde from manufacturing. Mirka says the investment also allows for raw material optimisation and waste minimisation.

With energy requirements at only about 10 per cent of what a conventional production line requires and new manufacturing technology, the environmental footprint is reduced.

The Jakobstad investment will total €25 million, covering the new production line, upcoming processing lines, and a technical upgrade of Mirka’s facility in Jakobstad.

The production line, expected to be operational in early 2027, is anticipated to create around 40 new jobs when fully operational.

“This investment is a significant part of Mirka’s sustainability efforts and commitment to green technology. We now see our vision for environmentally friendly development and growth beginning to take shape on an industrial scale,” added Sjöberg.
