Proactive maintenance key to costs savings, says ATS Euromaster

The ongoing trend of a lengthening vehicle lifespan, driven by improved build quality and market factors, presents a new set of challenges and opportunities for fleet operators.

While modern vehicles are more durable than ever, their service, maintenance, and repair (SMR) costs typically rise significantly in later life due to wear and tear and the increasing scarcity of parts.

In response to this challenge, Luke Scott, category manager at ATS Euromaster, a leading provider of tyres and fleet maintenance solutions in the UK, offers some proactive tips to help fleet managers extend the life of their assets and minimise SMR costs.

Act on the Small Things
Encourage drivers to report any unusual noises, changes in handling, or dashboard warnings immediately. Addressing minor issues like a squeaking brake or a developing rattle swiftly prevents them from escalating into expensive, and potentially dangerous, mechanical failures.

Prioritise regular checks
Beyond scheduled servicing, fleet managers should ensure drivers are conducting regular visual inspections. Monitoring tyre pressure and tread depth is essential for both safety and fuel efficiency. Likewise, regularly checking and topping up fluid levels including oil, brake fluid, and coolant can prevent major engine or braking system problems.

Pay Attention to General Vehicle Condition
While often overlooked, regular vehicle cleaning can be a valuable maintenance tool. Washing a vehicle reveals a clearer picture of its bodywork, allowing for the early detection of issues like rust, which can compromise structural integrity if left unaddressed.

Under-the-Bonnet Vigilance
Encourage drivers to monitor for any visible leaks of oil or water. This simple step can flag a developing issue with a seal, gasket, or hose before it leads to a costly roadside breakdown and extended vehicle downtime.

Embrace a Proactive Mindset
The single most effective strategy is shifting from a reactive “fix-it-when-it-breaks” mentality to a proactive “prevent-it-from-breaking” one. A well-planned, preventative maintenance schedule not only mitigates rising SMR costs but also improves safety and asset reliability, protecting both the vehicle and the driver.

Scott said: “Cars and vehicles on the fleet parc are ageing, and while this is a testament to modern engineering, it puts a greater emphasis on strategic SMR management. A reactive approach to maintenance can lead to costly downtime and major repairs.

“By adopting a proactive mindset and focusing on a few simple habits, fleet managers can significantly reduce their total cost of ownership and ensure their vehicles remain safe and reliable for longer.”
