Ireland’s crash repair sector at a crossroads

Ireland’s crash repair sector is facing a period of major change. Rising repair costs, technician shortages, increasingly complex vehicles, EVs and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are putting growing pressure on independent bodyshops, writes John Loughran.

Modern accident repair is no longer simply about straightening panels and applying paint. Even relatively minor collisions can involve cameras, radar, sensors and electronic systems that require diagnostics, programming and ADAS calibration before a vehicle can safely return to the road.

EVs are adding another layer of complexity, creating new requirements around high-voltage safety, battery systems, specialist equipment and technician training.

At the same time, parts shortages and rising labour costs are increasing repair times and putting further pressure on margins. Insurers are also seeking greater efficiency and tighter control of claims costs.

For independent bodyshops, the investment required to remain competitive is therefore increasing. Equipment, training, diagnostics, ADAS calibration and EV capability all come at a cost — at a time when finding skilled technicians is already a major challenge.

However, independence can still be a strength. Bodyshops with strong local reputations, skilled technicians, excellent customer service and the willingness to invest in new technology can continue to compete effectively.

The Irish crash repair sector is approaching a crossroads. The bodyshops that adapt to EVs, ADAS and increasingly sophisticated vehicle technology will be best positioned to succeed.

For independent operators, the challenge is not whether the sector is changing — but whether they can make the investment needed to change with it.
