{"id":19855,"date":"2020-05-29T10:03:01","date_gmt":"2020-05-29T10:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bodyshop.ie\/?p=19855"},"modified":"2020-06-02T10:03:42","modified_gmt":"2020-06-02T10:03:42","slug":"how-to-improve-the-safety-of-goods-vehicles-in-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bodyshop.ie\/index.php\/how-to-improve-the-safety-of-goods-vehicles-in-the-eu\/19855","title":{"rendered":"How to improve the safety of goods vehicles in the EU?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since the last European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) PIN report\u00a0looking at the safety of goods and passenger transport was published in\u00a02013, the transport sector has continued to evolve. <!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26668\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tyretrade.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/ETSC.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"305\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">Just-in-time delivery in<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0many industries; next-day<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">delivery of single items from online shops; clothes bought, tried on and then returned; supermarket home<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">delivery \u2013 in the background of all these services is an international network of transport that ends with<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0goods vehicles crisscrossing countries, cities and towns.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br class=\"\" \/>This report looks at the toll transport of goods and services has taken in terms of road deaths over the\u00a0period 2010 to 2018. It examines the performance of individual countries, as well as the European Union as\u00a0a whole, in tackling the risks, and describes some of the policies needed to reduce deaths and serious\u00a0injuries in the future.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31354\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cvworkshop.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/EU-Infographic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"886\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">Part I looks at the data on road deaths involving heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and examines the crucial issue of speed. Part II\u00a0covers the road death data for light goods vehicles (LGVs). It was not possible to look at LGV speed data because most\u00a0countries do not separate them from the data for cars.<br class=\"\" \/><br class=\"\" \/>Unfortunately we were also not able to cover serious injury data for either HGV or LGV collisions \u2013 in this case because we are\u00a0advised by the European Commission that the data are not available in enough detail and quality in enough countries.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26670\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tyretrade.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-02-at-10.55.14.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"480\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">In Part III we look at several key policies for tackling the main risks of goods vehicle transport including vehicle safety\u00a0improvements and regulations on driving and resting hours and driver training. This section also covers distraction, fatigue,\u00a0seatbelts and driving under the influence of alcohol and\/or drugs. We look at current legislation, particularly at EU level, as well\u00a0as the work-in-progress on some upcoming changes. Although we focus on EU action, examples of national and city-level\u00a0action are included as always.<\/span><br class=\"\" \/><br class=\"\" \/><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">At the heart of this report, as ever, are a set of disturbing figures that require urgent action. Thousands of people are still dying in\u00a0collisions involving goods vehicles in the EU every year: many goods vehicle drivers, but even more car occupants and\u00a0vulnerable road users. The solutions to preventing many road deaths associated with goods vehicles are available off the shelf\u00a0and have been for years.
