{"id":30192,"date":"2025-08-26T13:57:47","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T13:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bodyshop.ie\/?p=30192"},"modified":"2025-08-26T13:57:47","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T13:57:47","slug":"research-highlights-unusual-reasons-for-mot-failures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bodyshop.ie\/index.php\/research-highlights-unusual-reasons-for-mot-failures\/30192","title":{"rendered":"Research highlights unusual reasons for MOT failures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Motorists in the UK are failing MOTs for a wide range of obscure reasons\u200b,\u200b according to new research from online marketplace, eBay.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While suspension faults topped the list for overall failures &#8211; with broken springs accounting for more than \u200b\u200b821,991 unsuccessful MOTs \u2013\u200b\u200b 394 vehicles were failed for \u2018missing\u2019 suspension springs, 2\u200b\u200b0 vehicles failed for having a \u2018missing suspension arm\u2019 and\u200b\u200b 14 for \u2018missing\u2019 entire MacPherson struts \u2013 all key suspension components.<\/p>\n<p>Not all failures were hidden away though. Analysis of the data revealed \u200b\u200b61 motorists were driving vehicles with two different headlights,\u200b\u200b while 3,485 vehicles failed for lacking a wiper blade.<\/p>\n<p>eBay analysed data obtained from a Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). It investigated MOT failures between 1st June 2024 and 30th June 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u200b\u200bTyres below the 1.6mm legal limit were the single most common cause of failure, affecting more than 1,081,318 vehicles. Fractured suspension springs (\u200b\u200b821,911) and brake pads worn below 1.5mm (\u200b\u200b768,436) were the next most frequent issues.<\/p>\n<p>In the tyre category, which was the fourth highest overall for failures, \u200b\u200beight vehicles failed due to inadequate tyre speed ratings &#8211; a risk that can cause overheating and blowouts at higher speeds. A further\u200b\u200b 414 cars failed for being fitted with different size tyres across the same axle.<\/p>\n<p>Other safety issues that should have been obvious\u200b\u200b to spot included 265 failures for brake performance, specifically when vehicles swerved to the nearside during testing, and\u200b\u200b 516 failures due to cut or reworked seatbelt webbing, which could weaken restraint in a crash.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Motorists in the UK are failing MOTs for a wide range of obscure reasons\u200b,\u200b according to new research from online marketplace, eBay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2078,"featured_media":30194,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-30192","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.5 -
