As part of Skoda\u2019s birthday festivities, dealers nationwide are holding an open event until the 6th July with what they describe as unprecedented trade-in allowances and 3.9% APR finance on all new cars on offer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_3288\">\n<dd><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Directed by the late graet Eddie Thornton, Skoda Ireland launched in\u00a01993 with a two car range; the\u00a0&#8216;Favorit&#8217; &#8211; a small family hatchback\u00a0and the &#8216;Forman&#8217; &#8211; a light commercial vehicle. Both were\u00a0powered by\u00a0a 1289cc petrol engine, producing 68bhp.\u00a0The Favorit retailed from \u00a37,250 while the Forman had an entry price of \u00a36,500.<\/p>\n<p>In Skoda\u2019s first year just 76 new vehicles were registered through a dealer network of four dealers.<\/p>\n<p>1998 was a turning point for the brand in Ireland with the market\u00a0introduction of the Octavia, and\u00a0afterwards the Octavia Estate, with the\u00a0latest technologies from the Volkswagen Group.<\/p>\n<p>The following five yearswasa period of significant growth for\u00a0Skoda Ireland on the back of further model\u00a0launches such as the &#8216;Fabia&#8217; super mini in 2000, a finalist in the Irish Car of The Year, and the &#8216;Superb&#8217; executive saloon in 2002, as well as the expansion of the\u00a0dealer network to 21.<\/p>\n<p>Skoda&#8217;s growing\u00a0market\u00a0share in Ireland stands at 6.7% as\u00a0of May this year (more than dobled from\u00a0doubled from 3.0% in 2008).\u00a0It sold over 5,000 units in 2012 through an\u00a0independent dealer network of 22. Skoda Ireland hopes that each of their dealers will play an important\u00a0role in their continued growth to\u00a0achieve a stated objective of an 8 per cent\u00a0market share in Ireland by 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Not many people realise that Skoda is the third oldest car brand in the world and was founded in the former\u00a0Czechoslovakia in 1895. It was located in the heart of Europe in the Bohemian town of Mlada Boleslav (60km from Prague)\u00a0the first half of the 20th century saw Skoda survive two world wars.\u00a0Post 1945, Skoda fell under the communist regime and the company was state controlled.\u00a0\u00a0After the fall of communism in 1991, Skoda became part of the Volkswagen Group.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting, John Donegan, Brand Director for Skoda Ireland, said: \u201cWe are extremely proud of what has\u00a0been achieved over the past 20 years. The last five years have been among the most challenging the car\u00a0industry has seen but our products have proven they are fitting for the current environment where customers are\u00a0attuning to value more than ever before. This is only the beginning for Skoda. We have doubled our market\u00a0share in just five years and the next five years will see the introduction of even more models to the range\u00a0including two new SUVs by 2018.
