New Glasurit Mat Clear System
More and more car manufacturers are offering mat OEM finishes as exclusive special editions. This means that body shops now need to be able to reproduce different gloss levels during refinishing – no easy feat. To offer spray painters a simple solution for this task, BASF’s premium paint brand Glasurit has overhauled its Mat Clear System for achieving the perfect mat level.

Glasurit launched the Mat Clear System in 2012. Back then, depending on the gloss level, two mat clearcoats – 923-55 and 923-57 – had to be combined or one of these clearcoats had to be combined with a standard high-gloss clearcoat and mixed with different hardeners and thinners based on different formulas. Glasurit has now fundamentally simplified this method.
Easy method, short process
The new Mat Clear System now consists of just two components: Glasurit 923-55 MS Clear extra mat and the new Glasurit 923-58 MS Clear mat elastified, which replaces its predecessor, 923-57. This permits spray painters to reliably reproduce all common gloss levels, from 12 to 65 gloss units. The streamlined method considerably shortens the process and also helps prevent errors.
Glasurit has developed the new Glasurit 929-97 Premixed Hardener for Mat Clear System, which is perfectly tailored for use with the two mat clearcoats and is premixed. Spray painters therefore no longer need to add a thinner. Weighing inaccuracies have been reduced and different mat levels arising from different hardeners and the selection of thinners are now a thing of the past.
All steps precisely defined
The new Mat Clear System is convincing thanks to its precisely defined processes, for instance, for film thicknesses and flash-off times, which give spray painters a higher level of process reliability.
Spray painters can find the exact mixing formulas for the Mat Clear System in the Glasurit Color Online database. In addition, Glasurit has developed a tool that spray painters can use to easily determine the correct gloss level for the area surrounding the repair site: the gloss level swatch. Spray painters can use it to achieve ideal repair results – a perfect mat finish.
